Households in European Union (EU) are responsible for some 47 million tonnes of food waste annually and this is more than a half of all food waste generated in EU (FUSIONS, 2016). Having huge environmental, social and economic implications on local and global scale, food waste and its reduction becomes a common challenge of society. Achieving food waste related Global Sustainable Development Goals and aims of EU Green Deal, the role of consumers is of paramount importance.

The international conference “Taking household food waste seriously”, being part of a food waste awareness raising initiative by seven European countries, addresses household food waste and consumers role in tackling it. Conference intends to gather researchers and experts in the field, who could share crosscutting aspects of food waste and inspire with examples of successful interventions for higher public awareness and avoidance of the food waste in households. It explores political measures, consumer empowerment, innovations and the public awareness raising campaigns.

Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner in charge of environment, oceans and fisheries, will open the conference and give some insights on EU-level actions concerning food waste.

Zita Čeponytė, President of the Lithuanian Consumer Institute (Lithuania), will present international initiative Sincerely, food and the most effective activities of awareness raising campaign.

Erica van Herpen, Associate Professor at Wageningen University (Netherlands), will present household food waste drivers and possible interventions to avoid it.

Elina Närvänen, Associate Professor at Tampere University (Finland), will address the role of consumers becoming leaders of change in food waste reduction.

Anne Lerche, Special Advisor at Think Tank on Prevention of Food Loss and Food Waste (ONE\THIRD) and Special Advisor at Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark, will inspire with the best Danish practices tackling food waste.

Solveiga Pakštaitė, Founder and Director at Mimica (UK), will present her invention – the Mimica Touch smart label – and its contribution to the food waste reduction in households.

Inkeri Riipi, Research Scientist at Natural Resources Institute (LUKE) (Finland), will share Finish experiences and challenges addressing food waste in household sector.
